Frequently Asked Locksmith Questions.
Do you offer a genuine 24 hour service?
Yes, we offer a full 24 hour service, 7 days a week service to gain entry in the case of lost / stolen keys etc.
Do I need British Standard locks fitted to my property?
Yes, most insurance companies will not pay up if you have been the victim of a break in if you don't have British Standard locks fitted to your doors. The small print will state that you should take adequate measures to protect your home against break-ins and fit adequate locks, but generally will not specify what those measures are!
Many people have sub-standard locks on their front and back doors, but don't realise it.. British Standard locks should be fitted on all external doors as a matter of course.
If your insurance company are too vague about what is required, we can give you a free check to see if your locks are up to the required standard.
How do I know if my locks are British standard?
All British Standard items carry the a kite mark. The face of the lock (where the bolt is) should be stamped with the kite mark and the British standard number (BS 3621). UPVC doors differ slightly as they require a multipoint locking system. If you have a look and are still not sure give us a ring and we will talk you through it or come and take a look for you.
How do you gain entry if I am locked out?
There are usually a few different non-destructive methods that can be used to open most doors. Picking the lock is the favoured method, but there are also others we use. If all else fails, the lock can be drilled, but only as a last resort.
I am letting my property. Is there any way of fitting locks with keys that cannot be copied in the high street?
Yes there is. We can supply cylinders for most types of doors with profiles that are unique to us. Mortice locks can also be supplied with a restricted key profile, which means that you and only you could get keys duplicated.
Does your labour come with a guarantee?
Yes all labour is unconditionally guaranteed for 12 months. Most locks now carry a 5 or 10 year manufacturers guarantee.
Do you fit key safes and why are they used?
Yes we fit key safes. These are fitted on the outside of properties and hold the front door key in them. They are normally numeric or digital locks and can only be opened with the right code. These are used quite widely on elderly people's home as a precautionary measure if access is required to the property in an emergency or for carers to gain access. They are also used extensively on holiday lets to allow the holidaymakers to arrive at any time of the day or night without having to be met by the owner / housekeeper.
